Heartburn

Heartburn is another very common side effect, often accompanied by nausea. To help manage heartburn, you can:

  • Stay Hydrated. Drink clear fluids like water or herbal teas, such as peppermint tea.
  • Eat Small, frequent Meals. Similar to managing nausea, eating small portions frequently can help.
  • Avoid High-Fat Foods, Sugars, acidic foods and alcohol. These food types can make heartburn worse.

If this does not resolve, Try simple acid reflux medications like Gaviscon which you can buy over the counter. You can also request your GP or local pharmacist for medications such as Omeprazole or Nexium. These can offer longer term relief after a 14-day course, and your local pharmacist or GP can assist you in selecting one.

Using these medications for relief would be on an acute basis if from the pharmacy, however your GP can prescribe them long term. Please be aware that we do not suggest taking this medication for long term periods of time, as we want to prevent longer term side effects which may lead to reconsidering the GLP-1 treatment altogether.
