Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of Mounjaro® and Wegovy® and can be more noticeable when starting treatment or increasing your dose.

Nausea can sometimes be difficult to manage and may affect your usual daily activities. There are several things you can try to help manage your symptoms.

Tips for managing nausea and vomiting

Keep hydrated

Keeping hydrated is particularly important if you are experiencing nausea or vomiting.

Try drinking water regularly throughout the day and with or between meals. Taking small, frequent sips may be easier than drinking a large amount at once.

Some people find ginger tea helpful for settling nausea.

Eat small, plain meals

Try eating smaller portions of plain, easily digestible foods rather than large meals.

Foods such as plain toast, crackers, biscuits or cooked vegetables may be easier to tolerate when you are feeling nauseous.

Try to avoid rich, fatty or spicy foods if you find that these make your symptoms worse.

Try small energy boosts

If you are struggling to eat, small amounts of food or fluids may be easier to manage.

An ice pole or water with fruit in it may help you take in some fluid and energy. If you are finding drinking difficult, taking small, regular sips may be easier.

Choose your food carefully

Plain, cold or savoury foods may be easier to tolerate than hot, rich or sweet foods.

If you experience nausea regularly, it may be useful to keep track of when your symptoms are at their worst and adjust the timing of your meals accordingly.

Try to remain upright after eating rather than lying down immediately after a meal.

Avoid strong-smelling foods

Strong food smells can make nausea worse for some people. Cold foods may be easier to tolerate because they generally produce less smell than hot meals.

Get some fresh air

Some people find that getting outside for some fresh air or taking a gentle walk can help when they are feeling nauseous.

Speak to your local pharmacy

Your local pharmacist can advise whether an over-the-counter remedy may be suitable for you.

Make sure you tell them that you are taking Mounjaro® or Wegovy®, as well as any other medications you use, so they can take this into account when providing advice.

Our Clinical Team can also provide advice on managing nausea and vomiting while your body adjusts to treatment. If you are struggling with your symptoms, please contact us.

When should I contact Simple Online Pharmacy?

Please contact us if your nausea or vomiting is persistent, worsening or affecting your ability to eat or drink normally.

You should also contact us if you are experiencing significant side effects following a dose increase. Our Clinical Team can review your symptoms and treatment.

When should I seek urgent medical help?

Seek medical advice urgently if you are becoming significantly unwell or experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Persistent or repeated vomiting, particularly if you cannot keep fluids down
  • Signs of dehydration, such as dark urine, passing significantly less urine than usual, feeling light-headed or faint
  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Vomiting accompanied by severe abdominal pain or other concerning symptoms

Severe, persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it spreads to your back and occurs with or without vomiting, can be a sign of pancreatitis and requires urgent medical assessment.

If you are unable to keep fluids down, have signs of significant dehydration, feel faint or seriously unwell, seek urgent medical help.

Please contact our Clinical Team if you are unsure about your symptoms or whether you should continue with your current dose.
