Does Mounjaro® affect the Oral Contraceptive Pill?

Wegovy® has not been shown to affect the action of the contraceptive pill, while Mounjaro® may reduce the effectiveness of oral hormonal contraception.

Mounjaro® slows gastric emptying, particularly when you first start treatment and following a dose increase. This can affect how quickly oral contraceptive medication is absorbed.

We therefore recommend that women taking the contraceptive pill use an additional barrier method of contraception, such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro® and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. Alternatively, you may wish to switch to a non-oral method of contraception.

This additional contraception is not required for women taking Wegovy® on the basis of an interaction with the contraceptive pill.

Planning a pregnancy

Neither Mounjaro® nor Wegovy® should be used during pregnancy.

If you are planning to become pregnant:

  • Wegovy® should be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.
  • Mounjaro® should be stopped at least 1 month before a planned pregnancy.

If you become pregnant while taking either medication, stop treatment and contact your healthcare professional for advice.
